How can I repair the zipper on my tent?

The teeth on the zipper don't come together for about 1/4 of an inch. The zipper is ok above and below this spot and nothing wrong with the zipper pull. I can unzip the door about three feet before I come to the bad spot. I can't pull the zipper past this spot.

Any ideas?

How can I repair the zipper on my tent?

Why are there TWO zippers?

Why are there somtimes two zipper things on hoodies and jackets? And sometimes only one?

Ive always wondered this!

Why are there TWO zippers?
im wearing a hoodie like that now ha i dont know why jusdt a fashion sort of thing!
Reply:So if you zip the top one up, you can pull the second one up too to open up the jacket, it's a fashion thing, I guess.
Reply:that way you can sorta wear it like a cardie and on;y "botton" a few bottons at the top and leave the bottom undone.

How do you remove a zipper that is stick at the top of the jacket?

The bottom of the zipper track parted and now the zipper mechanism is lodged at the top of the zipper tracks and the tracks are wide open except at the top. I don't know how to get the zipper off without tearing the cloth or bending the zipper..is there a tool or trick to it?

How do you remove a zipper that is stick at the top of the jacket?
Use a pair of needle nosed pliers to press the misaligned teeth below the zipper bath together again, you should then be able to slowly back the zipper down the jacket.
Reply:use candle wax,run the candle on the zipper, that should do the trick and of course all the suggestion above are great, too. But if you still have problems with it,have the zipper change.

Is there a way to put a zipper back on a sweater?

My cousin and i were play fighting and she ripped open my sweater causing the zipper (the part that zippers it up) to go on the opposite side that it should be on. Is there a way i can re-attach the zipper?

Is there a way to put a zipper back on a sweater?
If all the teeth are still there and it is the kind of zipper that separates completly into two halfs when you unzip it you could try the following.

If you haven't already done this, first pull the zipper apart so that your sweater is unzipped. Pull the slider down the zipper until it comes off completly.

Go to the collar of the sweater and examine the end of the zipper track, there should be a small metal end stop over the end of the zipper track to prevent the zipper from coming off when you zip it all the way to the top.

Using a small screw driver or other small implement and maybe some pliers carefully remove the end stop from the zipper track on the side that the slider belongs and discard it.

You should now be able to slide it back onto the zipper track and move it back down to the bottom where it belongs. If the end of the zipper track is sewn into the collar it may be necessary to unpick it and sew it back in.

All things being well you should be able to zip it back up normally. If the end stop is still intact on the other track you should be able to still zip it all the way without the slider coming off.
Reply:Of course you can get it fixed but it may cost about 15 dollars, how much is the sweater worth??? Could you just go buy a new one?
Reply:yea there is way and its called sewing it back on.
Reply:A tailor or seamstress will fix it back on.
Reply:You can try taking a screwdriver and try to pry the zipper slider open just a little. Now manually close about one inch of the zipper and carefully put the slider into position and squeeze closed with a pliers. No guarantees but I have done it in the past.
Reply:Of course! Take it to a dry cleaner's and it won't cost anymore than $10, $15 tops. Good luck! : )

Mine do that after they have been washed a few times...It might happen because the fabric holding the zipper in is a different type of fabric than the sweat shirt. That's my thinking at least I dont know if Im right or not.

How do you fix a split zipper? why do they split ?

It happened to a couple of my sweaters and I tried changing zippers...HELP!

How do you fix a split zipper? why do they split ?
Generally one of two things.

You have some damaged teeth in the zipper run which allow the zipper to slide off track. In this case your only choice is to replace the zipper or not zip over this section.

A bend in the zipper at just the right angle caused the two teeth to split allowing the rest to follow and open up the zipped area. If there is no permenant damage to the zipper teeth on either side, rub a lead pencil over the teeth to reduce the friction against the teeth and work the zipper down to the bottom of sweater and try to re-zip.

You can't 'repair' a zipper, but at the same time all split zippers aren't damaged. Some companies just make lousy zippers!
Reply:I don't know, but it does happen
Reply:Good luck, they're frustrating!
Reply:try waxing the zipper...if not take to seamstress

Where can I find a zipper that is longer than 36"?

I'm looking for some sort of online store that sells zippers. The kind of zippers that you can work with, sew into things, etc. I'm hoping for something that is 4-5 feet long or 48"-60" long, because I'm making a guitar case for a friend.

Where can I find a zipper that is longer than 36"?
Have you considered going to a thrift shop and buying an ugly old sleeping bag that still has an good working zipper??? Or maybe an old overcoat, with a zip out lining. Or some other article?

It might be a little tedious picking it out, but it could be done and might be cheaper than buing new..............

Or maybe you know someone with these items.

Or use maybe two zippers that meet at the top and you could use a small lock to hold close good?

What religious or social groups ban zippers and why?
The Amish ban zippers because they are too modern for them; too much into the modern day. That's why some Amish groups ban suspenders and some only have one suspender. It depends on how modern or industrialized they think it is. I'm not sure whether or not the Hutterites ban zippers; they might.

Why do zippers have a "YKK" on them?

almost every zipper I have ever seen has one.

Why do zippers have a "YKK" on them?
As are most things that are mass produced (either in made in China or Japan), this product originates in Japan.

YKK zippers are mass-produced by YKK Company Limited (name of manufacturer and distributor). The YKK are the initials of the founder of the company; I dont think his name is relevant but just so you know..the YKK are actually initials for Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. Quite a mouthful... huh?!

As are most things that are mass produced (either in made in China or Japan), this product originates in Japan

Lower brands find it cost effective to use these zippers which are distributed worldwide; mainly for the use of seamtresses and tailors. So if your zipper has YKK on it, maybe the very clothes you are wearing were cheaply made and mass produced for the poor to middle man to afford. Chances are you would be able to tell the difference unless you check the zip.

As cheaply as this product is made, the irony of it all is that this YKK zip actually has look-alikes/ counterfeits on the market. So the question is which zips are the genuine YKK??? *sigh* I guess will never know.

PS. Some clothing manufacturers such as Levi's and LAND prefer to keep their trademark even on the very zips in their jeans.

High-end fashion lines such as Fendi, Prada and the ever popular Louis Vuitton also have thier own trademark zips as these names are not to be categorised with the "common-class" types.
Reply:It's the manufacturer of the zipper.
Reply:name brand of the manufacturer...

Reply:They don't. The bottom right leg of a K got scratched off of the first K so it looks like a Y. It is a sumbliminal message to join the KKK. That's why you shouldn't wear zippers. I'll never join you, you racist freaks! NEVER!
Reply:YKK is a brand of zippers produced in china. It's like the zipper logo
Reply:it's the company that makes them. they still have the patent.
Reply:A YKK factory site in Macon, Ga., produces 7 million zippers a day, in a total of 1,500 styles in more than 427 standard colors. It's the largest zipper factory in the world. The Macon site produces its own brass to make the teeth and slider parts of a zipper. The same factory also produces and dyes the yarn that is woven into the fabric portion of a zipper. And YKK also produces the machines that make the zippers! YKK has leveraged its knowledge of working with metals to form an aluminum building products division that now accounts for two-thirds of YKK's worldwide sales
Reply:That's the company who makes them.

What is the logic behind the fact that ladies shirt buttons or zippers have different direction from the men?

"This is a result of the preponderance of right-handed people, coupled with the tradition of ladies being dressed by a lady's maid rather than dressing themselves. Men's clothes are designed to be buttoned by the wearer and as such the button is on the right (from the point of view of the person wearing the garment) in order to benefit the right-handed majority when buttoning up. Women's clothes have the button on the opposite side, making it easier for the person who is dressing the lady. Until the 20th century, no lady of any standing would have been expected to suffer the chore of dressing herself."

Source: Shirt buttons - Questions answered - Letter - The Register, The Times, 23 May 2002, retrieved from Factiva database, last accessed 10 August 2006

"Some say this is done because many years ago women were dressed by their servant, slave, hand-maiden, or lady-in-waiting, and men usually dressed themsleves. In earlier days, women usually had their buttons in the back, that's why they had to have someone button them up. This made it easier for both parties, since 90% people are right-handed it was easier to button a shirt if the button was on the right."

Source: What Side Are The Buttons On?, last accessed 10 August 2006

"This goes back to the days of royalty and servants. A women's servant would stand in front and button the women's shirt for her. Buttons were put on the left to make this easier for the servant. Therefore, having the buttons on the left side of your shirt also indicated you were a women of means."

What is the logic behind the fact that ladies shirt buttons or zippers have different direction from the men?
As well as for ease of dressing, men's shirts and zippers are lapped on the right from when they used to carry swords. As most men were right-handed, their swords were on their left, and so the lapping of fastenings meant that if the sword brushed the clothing, it would skim over the fastenings rather than getting caught in them and causing injury.

Just as a random piece of info, swords are also the reason horses are mounted from the left.

Why do men's and women's clothes have zippers and buttons on opposite sides?

women used to have a helper dress them and it was easier to the helper if the buttons and zippers were reversed.

Why do men's and women's clothes have zippers and buttons on opposite sides?
they do?
Reply:It dates back to when women were dressed by servants but men dressed themselves. Thus, the servant facing the woman to dress her needed the buttons on the SERVANT'S right for convenience.
Reply:As for why buttons on men's clothing are on the opposite side of the garment from women's, this again was a bow to convention. Most people are right-handed. Men generally dressed themselves, so their buttons are on the right. Women, on the other hand, at least those who could afford garments with buttons, frequently had a lady's maid to assist with the dressing process -- so the buttons were reversed to make it easier for the maid to do them up.
Reply:good question,u must be bored tho!
Reply:so the slave children folding them can differentiate which pile to throw them in in case one gewts lost from the others.
Reply:Women usally have help in dressing, so it's easier for the person helping to button or zipper if it was adjusted reversed.
Reply:Because one side is from Mars %26amp; the other from Venus.
Reply:women were usually helped in dressing up in earlier days so the zippers and buttons were often kept on the reverse side.moreover, i guess, it would have looked silly if men had to have their zippers and buttons at the back and women had to have them in the front
Reply:I believe it's because back in the old days women used to be dressed by their servants or housemaids so the fasteners where placed to accomodate a person from the other direction.

How can I fix a broken zipper on a backpack?

I have this Nike backpack I've had for about 7-8 years now, I really like it but the zipper is broken on it...for some reason, the zippers are together but they just won't zip it up. When it first started, I had to keep going over the unzipped part until it would zip up...and now it's so bad that I can't get any of it to zip. I have to keep the two zippers together and pull them really hard and fast at an angle to try to get the zipper to lock up.

Is there anything I can do myself to fix this, or will I need to bring it to a tailor shop? And if so does anyone know about how much it would cost? I already bought another Oakley backpack a few months ago but I wanted to keep the Nike one for the gym and stuff.

How can I fix a broken zipper on a backpack?
Unless you know something about sewing, you'll need to bring it to a seamstress. You could always put an ad on Craigslist and ask if anyone would like to do it for a certain price, might cost less than going to a professional. It shouldn't cost that much, it's not difficult if you have experience doing it.

The zipper on my hoodie is wavy?

I washed my hoodie a few days ago and just took it out of the dryer and the part that zippers up is wavy instead of straight like it should be.

Is there a way to fix it and make it look normal and straight? Are there ways to keep it from happening again if I want to wash another one of my hoodies? Someone told me you should have it fully zipped and then wash it? Do you know if that works? Or have any other ideas?

The zipper on my hoodie is wavy?
It means that the material the zipper is sewed to has shrunk. You may be able to stretch it a little by wetting it again and gently stretching it out. You could also try ironing it when it is wet, using a warm iron.

When you wash your hoodies, make sure they are zipped, use only cool water, and if you put them in the dryer, do so only on the gentle setting with not too much heat and hang them to finish drying. Letting them dry flat would be even better, but most of us do not have the patience for that. Best of luck with it.
Reply:Yes you should always zip up zippers before putting them into the washer and dryer. That goes for all clothes. You probably had the dryer too hot and the zipper went wavy because the cloth around the zipper that holds it in place got over dried. You can't fix the zipper now except if you wear it a few times it might straighten out.

Reply:funny question. Some times the double thick fabric that covers the zipper when it is zipped, or the inside fabric that the zipper is sewn onto will lean over and lay accross the zipper.when you pull the zipper up it also pulls the fabric in and the zipper head will catch the fabric and hold it there. At this point you have to pull the fabric out. This also leads to broken zipper teeth. If youre zipped up and the bottom opens you got problems. At this point you can only line up the zipper teeth as best you can and try to unzip if you cant you will have to operate and remove the teeth from the head. oh and dont try to zip up agian it is waisted.

What is sexier buttons, zippers, or velcro?

BUTTONS!!!!! How is there any debate? The time it takes to undo them adds to the suspense, and it's even more dramatic if you pull the whole rip-open-your-shirt- and-buttons-fly- everywhere act.

Buttons win, hands down.

What is sexier buttons, zippers, or velcro?
buttons =]
Reply:Buttons because they are more customized you know...a zipper can be changed with color...velcro is something I don't even want to discuss...but buttons can be different colors, patterns, shapes and sizes...I don't think thay are sexy I just think they stand out more...
Reply:If anyone answers velcro, I will be shocked! There is nothing sexy about that scratchy noise it makes when pulled apart.

Zippers are sexy in that you can slowly reveal without fumbling with buttons. However, a button up shirt can look very handsome. It fully depends on what we are talking about! Jean flys? Shirts? What?

Hey men why cant we keep our zippers up?

Okay so I just got alot of heat from women..Guys..No more sex with gurls! .....Do you want to be a father? do you want to take care of a child for the rest of your life? its you bad guys who get these gurls pregneat and ruin their lives!....Sorry fella's I gotta find out coz the gurls are mad at me. so why?

Hey men why cant we keep our zippers up?
You seem smart. At least there's still one guy left in this world who knows the consequinces of sex.
Reply:tired of sex...oh my
Reply:Think. The answer is obvious. Those who cannot control themselves are dead or very ill mentally or physically. The rest choose not to control themselves. It's a matter of self discipline. It all goes back to thought and choices.

By the way, if a situation can be considered in advance and a decision made, it makes the situation much easier to deal with. It is easier to say no to sex if you have made the decision before you are alone with a girl. If you try to make a decision in the heat of the moment, you will very likely fail.

Another option is to marry, carefully and not haphazardly. Sex is a great benefit of marriage. Husbands, with regard to their wives, don't have to control themselves; they can enjoy their wives.

What does the "YKK" printed on zippers mean??

1. What does "YKK" stand for?

YKK was founded in Japan as a zipper manufacturing company in 1934 by Tadao (pronounced in English as Tah-dah-o) Yoshida. In the early years, Mr. Yoshida's company carried his name; it was called Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha--or "YKK" for short. (That long Japanese name translates roughly into English as "Yoshida Company Limited.") Over the years, the letters "YKK" were stamped onto the zippers' pull tabs, and thus YKK became known as the Company's trademark. Today, the name of the brand is also the name of the company: YKK Corporation.

Splitting Zippers?

Does anyone know a home remedy for fixing splitting zippers? (Where you zip it up, and it splits open?) Your help is appreiciated! ps, I saw a seamstress do it, but I don't know how!

Splitting Zippers?
Your problem probably is caused by the slider that you pull up and down..If you can get a new slider that will solve the problem usually. the bottom of the slider has spread and can be tapped back to where it should be, About one mm..then the slider will track better..Or change the zipper
Reply:Buy a new zipper. I had to do that before. My dad put a new one on my coat because it wouldn't zip.

Would it be trendy to sew fifty zippers into my black skirt?

It wouldn't be trendy, but it would definitely be unique -- which I think is ten times better. Trendy is overrated; why would you want to wear something that hundreds of other girls are wearing? Following trends too closely isn't cool, it just shows a total lack of imagination. What is cool is coming up with your own style that incorporates a couple of trends, but isn't a complete copycat look.

Real style is all about wearing things that look good on you. Do not make the mistake of becoming a fashion clone.

I think the zippers would be very interesting. Depending on how you style it and what you wear with it, you could rock a lot of different looks. Like one of the answerers mentioned, you could try using different colored zippers. Or you might want to use black zippers for a more subtle effect. Don't forget that there's a lot of potential in just the arrangement of the zippers. You could line them up or stack them neatly, or you could do alternating rows (kind of like a brick wall type of arrangement). Or if you use really short zippers, you could arrange them in starburst formations or some other shapes.

Use your imagination and you'll be sure to come up with something fun and unique.

Would it be trendy to sew fifty zippers into my black skirt?
Well it depends on where you live on what type of skirt you're sewing. In San Francisco trendy is whatever you make it. However, if you are using that many zippers perhaps stitching them vertically and parallel onto an A line skirt (narrow at the waist, wider at the thighs and knees) would be cute. Imagine the entire edge of the skirt being a one row of zippers and then above that row, stitching another row of (smaller?) zippers. You would create a ruffled edge of zippers.

The skirt material would have to be fairly thick because the metal edge is going to weight it down. I
Reply:well me and my best friend once put like 100 safety pins to a shirt and i looked pretty cool, best thing no one else had the same shirt , trendy I don't think that trend will pick up but very original.

Can u repair Jeep Wrangler Soft-top zippers without going to a dealer???
ya i guess you can but you have to find someone who will deal with those big things. however if your top is just junk and you need a new one id just buy a new one cuz sometimes its way way cheaper then taking it to someone whos gonna fix it and charge you an arm and a leg. or if your jeep still has the original manufacturers warranty they will replace it for you because the soft top isnt a wear and tear item they replaced mine when my back windows zipper got stuck. but again check some sort of reupholster place for cars or even a boat top repair place if you can find one of those since boat tops and jeep tops are close to the same thing.
Reply:Yes! I just has my soft doors done last year with heavy duty marine zippers and tinted window material for about $100.

This is about 10% of what the dealer wants. Bestop is a great product, however, Smittybuilt uses a heavier material.

Do you like clothes with zippers or buttons?

why?

Do you like clothes with zippers or buttons?
nice quality buttons beat zippers for a classy finished look every time. I like to see the way a house is built and clothes are like architecture. Carefully chosen buttons show the designer thought about the details and the construction of the piece.
Reply:For pants/jeans I like zippers, much easier %26amp; faster. For shirts I prefer neither, but I guess buttons if I had to choose, zippers are akward on shirts.
Reply:that depends on the garment.
Reply:buttons, especially when I am wearing jeans because I feel more

comfortable
Reply:buttons---easier to fix and replace, less dangerous...
Reply:Buttons--zippers add a certain element of tackiness unless it's on a hoodie for functionality. Plus buttons come in all shapes, sizes, and colors (more fun %26amp; variety!), whereas zippers are usually plain silver.
Reply:buttons they look classier and more fun
Reply:Zippers obviously, Have you ever needed to drop a duece like nobody's business or piss like a russian racehorse with a glue truck behind it, and those damn buttons just get in the way? Zippers are quick, on the drop and BAMM!! you're good to go. Plus as a guy, lets just say you are gonna hit the sheets with a chick, you don't be fumbling around with buttons, let alone your own buttons, by the time you get done, neither of you are gonna be in the mood. I say it because of experience.
Reply:i wear things with zippers cos they r easier nd can still look kinda cute (they r faster 2!)

however

buttons come in so many different styles nd can b soo0o cute so i like them better.. but it depends wat ur doin with them
Reply:Buttons. They really look fashionable and they also could be in different colours, that u are able to reconize. Zippers are cool too, but for most clothing, buttons are a fashionstia.
Reply:I hate zippers...they have a tendency to pinch either flesh or hair...not fun
Reply:I like zippers better. Sometimes buttons depending on the size are hard to work with.

Reply:Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Buttons are nice because they don't snag as easily...but on the other hand, if they're poorly sewn on they fall off, and sometimes they won't stay closed. Zippers are good because they're more likely to stay shut...but on the other hand, they snag, and one funky part (like a broken/missing tooth) in it will render the whole thing useless. Basically, I don't prefer one over the other, so I just have both.
Reply:I LIKE BUTTONS BECAUSE ZIPPERS CAN GO OFF TRACK AND ITS EASIER, AND CHEAPER TO SEW ON BUTTONS THAT TO REPLACE A ZIPPER.
Reply:I just do, laughing gives me something to do
Reply:I prefer slipons but between zippers and buttons, I would choose buttons.

(((hugs)))
Reply:I like both..it jus depends!!
Reply:Zippers ~ they're easier to use
Reply:I like jeans with zippers not just buttons, because when it gets really cold and windy I get a slight breeze...it sucks.
Reply:Most of the time buttons. I just think they look better on me.
Reply:It all depends on where the zippers or buttons are located...LOL...you know what I mean?
Reply:buttons - safer ;-)
Reply:For the quick changes, there's nothing to beat the trusty zipper, yet easthetically nothing beats buttons! There's just something more sexy about buttons . . . especially on tight fitting denims!!! or a soft, gauzy blouse, straining against the well proportioned feminine mamary gland charms!!! It just DOES it!!!
