Why are trouser zippers (flys) on opposite sides for men and women?

The trouser zipper is closed from the left to the right on women%26#039;s trousers and from the right to the left on men%26#039;s trousers.

Why?

Why are trouser zippers (flys) on opposite sides for men and women?
Back in the middle ages men would have their wives put their clothes for them or if they were rich maids or a servant would put their clothes for them. Since it was easier to button left to right the buttons would be placed on the right. So for whoever was dressing the man would find it easier. The women on the other hand would normally dress themselves and since its easier to pull the buttons from left to right the buttons are put on the left. So from her perspective it would be from left to right.

I hope this clears up your question
Reply:Just a hold over from the days when women were dressed by their maids. It was easier for right-handed maids to manipulate button closures that way. When zippers started being used the designers just followed the ongoing convention. Sometimes cleverness in design doesn%26#039;t follow thru all phases of construction (ask a car mechanic what he thinks of engineers and their designs!).
